Chapter 5 | The Dublin Pub

“On countless occasions, Áxel had surrendered to the high induced by the Celtic rock performed there. The soundwaves stimulated him like the rhythmic crash of waves against Caribbean sands.”

“As the airplane ascended over San Juan, Áxel descended into his own personal depths. He buried himself in his thoughts –like the dead when covered by gravediggers.”

“Áxel lived in solitude. Sure, he was surrounded by people and a handful of friends, but he lived alone in Dayton under the merciless attacks of time.”

“As Áxel walked back to his table, an Irish-American redhead passed him in the opposite direction. She was lightly freckled with spots of cinnamon glazed on her skin. Their eyes met as they passed each other… He scanned the redhead from heels to the rich burgundy of her hair. When creating this woman, God spilled his blood and massaged it into each heavenly strand. Such was the beauty in the intensity of its color.”

“Is time an illusion? Why was Áxel so fully aware of it? The movement of women through space, through open spaces in pubs, and the resulting distances also mark the reality of time’s passing. Time must be real. Unfortunately, its passing also accelerated his fading youth.”

“An enticing rebel strolled by their table. A black tattoo of a flame ran from mid-neck toward her shoulder and into her top. The men followed its trajectory like children who have discovered that the ball doesn’t really disappear when it rolls under the sofa… She slowed her pace, as if to give Áxel the chance to stop her. Her eyes told him she didn’t want to return to her table, that she’d prefer to spend the night with him… Roberto had noticed the naughty rebel, ‘She gave you a big smile.’ Áxel replied pensively, ‘It was a borrowed smile. It belongs to someone else. It was just borrowed.'”

“Tuning out everything that was going on around him, Áxel yearned to know what it feels like to be loved, truly loved.”
