Chapter 6 | The Oregon District

“…but how it received its name is a mystery that eludes our chronicling duty. Only humans are obsessed with this duty. We have a need to timeline everything. In the process, we naively overlook that timelines and the flow of time go from birth to death, construction to destruction, and existence to nonexistence.”

“In truth, time can be a friend to whom and what it wants. It knows how to turn away and pretend to take little to no notice of you. Time’s benevolence was something Áxel had seldom experienced.”

“The Great Flood of 1913 wounded Dayton’s prideful spirit. It was as if God looked down on Daytonians and feared that if he didn’t stop them, there would be nothing impossible for them… | …Daytonians overcame because this is what Daytonians do, they overcome.”

“Áxel had noticed Dayton’s more recent decline. He wondered if it was an inevitable fate, whether cities were like humans in this respect, like him –cities and humans victimized by the onslaught of time.”

“As the server approached for the first time and introduced herself, Áxel was completely smitten with her beauty. Her skin was smooth. Her remarkably long, soot-colored ponytail swung like a pendulum measuring time –ticktock– and each of her assertive footsteps. In the dimly lit space, her face was made of porcelain… | …In quick time, he thought about the taste of her skin and the smell of her neck. He imagined what it would be like to run his fingers down her arching back and the back of her arms, lightly, just brushing with his fingertips as she lay on her stomach…”

“Áxel was an expert at the art of reading a woman’s soul. He read through her eyes and vanished into her lustful and loving world.”

“Áxel dreaded every step she took away from him –too many for his beating heart to count.”
