Poem: Skin of Blood

Poem: Skin of Blood (translation of Piel de Sangre)

Selected Verses:

Skin of Blood

(translation of Piel de Sangre)
by Luis S. González-Acevedo

Owner of the Caribbean, where are your dreams?
Little Caribbean native, what do you inherit
from your parents?
The skin color stained across your chest
that an eternal Golden Century turns to blood…

…Caribbean native, break your chains and be free!
I invite you to the land that’s always yours;
its clouds lick blood from your body:
Paradise of Cacique Hayuya.

A paradise that wipes away all tears
and channels them into a crystal brook.
The celestial king kisses them with his rays and transports them
to a place that’s not a place –deadly for tears.

Poem: A Child

Poem: A Child (translation of Un Niño)

Selected Verses:

A Child

(translation of Un Niño)
by Luis S. González-Acevedo

…Our planet offers so much abundance.
Anything superfluous and dispensable, we discard.
Our “love” is a native of Hell
because it doesn’t feel the misery in the world.
Instead, we steal the earth’s wealth and abundance.

A fragile child staggers.
She falls and curls up, suffering.
A desperate mother falls upon her,
murdered by the world that let her die.

Poem: Torment

Poem: Torment (translation of Tormento)

Selected Verses:

Torment

(translation of Tormento)
by Luis S. González-Acevedo

Torment in a fantasy world,
a god suffers because of his beloved’s contempt.
This fool hides behind clouds,
spearing with mortuary cries.

From his hard-set eyes,
tears fall like eagles.
His beloved awaits. They accompany pleasures
from another who hides in the skies.

Poem: Falling Drops (translation of Gotas que Caen)

Poem: Falling Drops (translation of Gotas que Caen)

Selected Verses:

Falling Drops
(Gotas que Caen)

Many love in cloudless skies,
sunny skies, fully radiant;
but love resides in aqueous perfumes:
Drops that fall and compel me to love you.

I love in torrents of copious rains.
I submerge in waters wanting to find you
until your body is found invaded by droplets:
Drops that fall and compel me to love you.

In Heaven, your body dresses with droplets,
framing your form like a masterpiece;
pouring from your breasts like cascades:
Drops that fall and compel me to love you.

It’s a chant of love to the rain,
who shares her bed with passions;
sensual, over me, and spilling in liturgy:
Drops that fall and compel me to love you.

Poem: Death, Fall Upon My Tamed Face

Poem: Death, Fall Upon My Tamed Face

Selected Verses:

Death, Fall Upon My Tamed Face
(Translation of Muerte, Cae Sobre Mi Domada Frente)

Death, fall upon my tamed face.
Bring night’s darkness to my eyes;
and while they can still open and close,
bring me to my knees…

Silence my mortuary tears.
Proclaim for me an unstable life
that’s tortured by never-ending days
–a pernicious fortune badly suffered…
